How to Prepare for a Demolition Project in Boston
Circa Demo & Disposal has completed hundreds of interior demolition projects in Greater Boston. This guide shares what homeowners should do before the demolition crew arrives.
2 Weeks Before Demolition: Confirm date and scope with contractor. Verify permits are obtained. Schedule utility disconnections (plumber/electrician to cap water, gas, electrical). Arrange temporary living if essential rooms affected. Notify homeowner's insurance. Submit work notification to building management (condos).
1 Week Before: Remove ALL personal belongings from demo area. Remove fragile items from adjacent rooms. Take photos/video for records. Clear path from demo area to exit (36+ inches clearance). Label items that should NOT be demolished. Notify neighbors with specific dates. Confirm truck parking arrangements.
Day Before: Shut off water supply at nearest valve. Turn off electrical circuits at breaker panel. Cover HVAC vents with plastic and tape. Lay drop cloths on adjacent floors. Seal doorways with 6-mil plastic sheeting. Move vehicles from truck access area. Unlock gates and access points.
Safety During Demolition: Stay out of active work zone. Keep children and pets away during work hours. Wear N95 mask if entering adjacent areas. Report unexpected conditions (mold, odors, hidden pipes) immediately.
Hazard Awareness: Asbestos (pre-1980 buildings), lead paint (pre-1978), mold (behind walls/under flooring), hidden utilities, structural surprises from unpermitted work.
What to Expect on Demo Day: Crew arrives 7:30–8:00 AM. Site walkthrough and scope confirmation. Setup (dust barriers, floor protection) 30 min. Active demolition 8:30 AM–4:00 PM. Final cleanup and walkthrough 4:00–5:00 PM. Boston noise ordinance: 7 AM–6 PM Mon–Sat.
